INSTRUCTIONS

Fig 1.1: Key Artwork instructions

Task 2A: Key Artwork

For Task 2A we are to design a key artwork, which behaves as a logo and artwork. We are to use our name/initials. This key artwork will subsequently be used in Task 2B on various collateral.

- Not necessarily legible
- Artwork made from type
- Explore options - compositions etc
- Almost monogram-ish
- Certain level of simplicity
- Elegant solution, visual communication
- Artwork needs to be scalable

Chosen field: Luxury Fashion Brand
(bold serifs)

Fig 1.2: refined sketches

Mr vinod agreed on using the first key artwork when the stroke width are equal. The fig above shows the refined key artwork (lost the initial one).

Chosen key artwork:

Poster

I planned to do a minimal style poster that would match my logo. I first created a blank page to sketch my ideas.

Fig 2.1: digital sketch

from here i played around with the information in the poster, the logo and the whole composition until i ended up with the figure below.

Fig 2.2: initial poster

Mr vinod then commented to have a more general information in the poster to attract all audiences, not just my intended niche audience. He said the crop of my logo is good but then add my actual initials or full name beside the logo in the bottom right corner.

After further adustments, i decided to make my key artwork 3d for the crop in the poster. While taking note of the feedback from Mr.Vinod, i added the neccessary changes.

Fig 2.3: Final Poster
For the poster simulation, i decided to place my poster in a minimalist contemporary museum type display which matches my location and context of the poster.

Collateral

i got several ideas for my collateral, since my theme is fashion, i would like to get a mockup of a product box and shirt tags.

Animated Invite

Since i decided to use a 3d representation for my poster, i decided to have several animations that highlights my logo in 3d space. I spent the most time doing the animated invite as i had to mess around with 3d objects, 3d lights, and 3d camera.

Fig 4.1: after effects

I am used to working using 2 different video editing softwares, after effects for VFX and Final cut for non-linear video editing. After getting all my vfx done in after effects, i moved to final cut for editing.

Fig 4.2: Video Editing

I forgot to that we were required to have a square aspect ratio, good thing that my content are croppable and easy to modify.

Ill have 2 animated invite, 1 in 16:9, and another in 1024x1024.

FEEDBACK

Week 8:
Make a consistent stroke width for the outer and inner initials of the logo.

Week 9:
Mr vinod then commented to have a more general information in the poster to attract all audiences, not just my intended niche audience. He said the crop of my logo is good but then add my actual initials or full name beside the logo in the bottom right corner.

REFLECTION

Experience

I had fun and learned alot doing this task as i feel like im actually learning skills that would relaly be used in the real world of developing a brand from scratch.

Observation

I observed throughout designing the logos and collateral for this task, having a good attention for detail is very important, the slightest changes could have a massive difference.

Findings

Same as what i've observed, i found that having a detailed perspective would be key in to successfully developing a brand.

FURTHER READING

Based from the files in the facebook group, i read further regarding typography from a book poster there named "A Type Primer by John Kane"

Fig 10.1: A type Primer: John Kane

I would just go with this book as its posted in the facebook group. Secondly, I've seen the content of the book which correlates to the topics that we learn in typography, plus more.

In this book, the basics such as fonts, typefaces, definitions and the history is shown, its like a continuation of the lecture given by Mr. Vinod. Other topics that is also present in the book which helped me gather references and knowledge includes:

        - Typeface comparison
        - Type expression
        - Letterforms
        - Text formatting such as:
                - tracking
                - kerning
                - leading
                - highlighting text
                - widows and orphans
                - column layouts
                - cross-alignment
                - hierarchy

This book also has several topics not discussed in class, such as colors. Color, which isn't lectured as detail as the book, has not even been discussed as for our first assignment, colors were not to be used.
