Project 2: Sense of Place
LECTURE
Lecture 7- Sense of place (The importance of observation)
Fig 1.1: Lecture 7
In the simplest description, a designer's role is to solve problems with
effective visual communication. "Problems" that a designer solve are aplenty
- ranging from personal goals to community events, and from corporate
functions to world changing projects - all through creative, visual
communication means.
The importance of observation
A designer knows what imagery or content to include in the design by
observation. Being observant means to be attentive to the surroundings, to pay
attention to the details and to be analytical about them.
For a designer, observation can be an effective way to get ideas. Sources of
observation can stem from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings,
and such.
The lecture video shows several examples of artworks that gets inspired from
nature by being observant. Another example is from an instagram account that
shows a very good example of minimalist layout design which due to observing
shows a very nice sense of place.
A video about being observant is also included in this lecture
Fig 1.2: 8ways to improve your power of observation
This video explained 8 ways to improve your observation game by:
- Knowing your subject (we will notice more by understanding
it)
- Slowing down and look outwards (use mindfulness to focus on the surroundings)
- Trying something new (choose an activity that will engage
your senses and heighten your awareness)
- Improve your concentration by cutting out
distraction.
- Challenging ourselves to a mental workout
- Testing our observation skill by playing a memory
game
- Record and consider our observation
- Stay inquisitive!
"All we have to believe is our senses: the tools we use to perceive the
world, our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can
be trusted.?"

I wanted to create an illustration of a place i go often in my home country.
Me and my friends usually go to this area in North Jakarta, Indonesia to rent
electric scooters where we would just stroll around at night.
I then added a photography technique called long-exposed in vector form
consisting of several different layers to give out a more balanced composition
with leading lines.
Project 2: Sense of Place
The place is located here.
Fig 2.1: exact location of my selected place
I searched for images that would suit my desired frame which i would base my
illustration from.
Fig 2.2: scene
After i found my reference image, i started tracing to create a vector
illustration in Adobe Illustrator.
Fig 2.3: creating the roads for the bridge
I used the pen tool to help me draw out the road and the road lines using a
guide to make a good sense of perspective.

REFLECTION
I had a pretty good idea on what my most memorable place is, i then continued to develop the artwork almost directly. I mentioned that the place i chose is a bridge located in Jakarta which i used to rent and play e-scooters with my friends late at night enjoying the late night breeze with little to no cars on the road. I used a series of compositional elements taught in BDCM to help me construct this artwork. Overall, i had fun doing this artwork while still learning and further familiarizing the whole design principle.
