Task 1: Proposal

Fig 1.1: Team members

We started our research by creating a group using telegram due to having team members from china which couldnt use whatsapp.

While brainstorming on what culture our group will do a study on, several of my group members suggested to use anime as our choice of culture, i suggested to use french fashion culture instead, they all agreed on my suggestion.

For the initial proposal keynote, To start of with a good context on our topic, I started our keynote with the history of fashion. I did a research for the history of fashion.

The requirements for the proposal was to have a problem statement and our research questions. Our team (excluding jia chen & huai yi) brainstormed for several hours and several zoom meetings to finalize our problem statement and research questions. Problem statement and RQ:

The next requirement for task 1 is for us to do a recorded presentation from our keynote. Initially i asked my teammates to record whatever parts they contributed to the keynote in a form of video which i would edit in Final Cut once everyone has submitted to me. Then Mr. Asrizal cleared out my misunderstanding of recording and editing it, he explained to use zoom to record the meeting together as a group.

Task 2: Data Collection

Fig 3.1: Research Questions

Our next assignments is to collect data. Our group decided on doing a video interview people who are familiar on fashion or Couture itself. The problem is that we tried to contact other people for interview but no response or had no knowledge on it. Our group had Adriel and Clay's friend with is a fashion design student, we then asked adriel and clay to interview their FD friend for out data collection. Since our method of data collection is limited to a single person, our group decided to do our own further research regarding french fashion couture.

For task 2, I help complete 1 of the requirements which is to summarize the collected data to 1 slide.

After finishing the keynote, we had to record a presentation again. This time all of us were doing the parts in the recording. We had to reshoot some of the parts to edit it in post because the initial video exceeded the 10 minute mark. I was in charge of editing the video since im the group leader.

Task 3: Final Project

Fig 4.1: Collage artwork

For our final project, Jia Xuan suggested a collage for our final digital artwork. We all agreed on doing the final project digitally. Due to the fact that our group is all taking the same digital design major, we agreed that presenting a digital artwork would be better in contrast to doing a physical artwork. In addition, not all of our groupmates are in the same place and preventive measures were also considered due to the pandemic.

So now is the idea we would like to put out.So we 1st need a message and I suggested that "Couture is the 1 that inspire different aspect of the fashion industry".So what to do with that message and I said "Collage", where the big picture is a Couture outfit but the small little picture will be the "different aspect of the fashion industry" - Jia Xuan

Fig 4.2: Surrealism Artwork

To have several design explorations, i also contributed my thoughts at the moment which is creating a surrealism artwork. Where the Couture outfit is somewhat in a god-like position and the other fashion style will bow down to it (clothes only). My team agreed that my idea was good, but then my team and i knew that this artwork would be very time consuming.

Adriel then decided on going for the collage design, the rest of us will choose which fashion-style to use with 10 pics in it compiled in google drive.

I chose several examples of contemporary haute couture used in several fashion runways by fashion designers i admire such as Maison Martin Margiela, Rick Owens and etc...

Since adriel has the most experience in graphic design, and will take graphic design as his major, adriel volunteered to design the final project using photoshop. I helped adriel to start the collage by using several magazine covers of high fashion labels and use their logo/atelier name letter by letter to contruct the words " H A U T E    C O U T U R E ".

Fig 4.3: Magazine Covers (compiled)

I first compiled fashion labels that includes the letters from " H A U T E    C O U T U R E " in their name.

Fashion brands used:
    - Cartier
    - Chanel
    - ChloĆ©
    - Christian Dior
    - Givenchy
    - Gucci
    - Louis Vuitton
    - Tiffany & Co.
    - Valentino
    - Versace

After finishing the design, i forwarded the .psd to adriel for him to continue the 10 fashion images and types we chose in the groups gdrive.

REFLECTION

Experience:

The whole experience learning a module with little supervision was new and quite challenging. I was the assigned team leader so i have bigger responsibility. It was sometimes frustrating when it comes to holding a meeting on a time that everyone that is suitable. I am happy that the topic i suggested was what we agreed on, and my team members were comfortable with it.

Observation:

I observed that there are so many cultures around the world and there are still more to explore. Due to this module being on a short semester, we were limited to 7 weeks of work.

Findings:

I found that the topic we chose, which is french fashion culture (haute couture) is a niche culture, and not for the interest of the average consumer due to its avant garde design and hefty price tag.
