LECTURE

Fig 1.1: Making Comic

3 Acts Structure

Ms. Anis gave us an introduction to "How to Make a Story" for our next project, webtoon, today. So, Ms. Anis taught us the fundamentals of storytelling:

 - Theme

        - What the story about
        - Often : storyteller's personal opinion about something
            Major theme : base theme
Minor theme : following the major theme (not mandatory but can create more complex story
            if used)

 - Conflicts
        - What drives the story
        - Create tension and suspense
        - Engage the audience

 - Characters

        - Have role, mostly always a protagonist and an antagonist
        - Central Character : vital
        - Protagonist : usually the main character, must command emotional involvement from
           the audience
        - Antagonist : opposing of protagonist, usually standing between the protagonist goals. (can be place, thing, or situation.)

- Three Act Structure

        - Setup : the world of the story
        - Rising Tension : the rising problem, before the conflict
        - Conflict : the main problem (have to be interesting)

 - Gutters

        - Empty space between panels
        - Can indicate the comics's storyline flow, since comic is static

Gutters serve as an invisible messenger in comics, passing information while remaining an empty area. In order for time and motion to occur, comic artists require gutters as well as the reader's participation in forming inferences from them.

This time, you will be coming up with a horror  themed comic!

You are now tasked to create a one shot Web Toon short with the premise of a horror genre story of your own creation. Consider 3-act structures but with interesting twists and plots. It can be wordless and presented only with illustrations, or it can be detailed with stories, filled with speeches and texts.

Think of creating a premise for a story that makes your readers creeped out, scared, and of course you can end the story on a happy note too! Use logline visuals to help establish your narrative.

 Project requirements:

  Must be published at webtoons.com
  Story must have 3-acts structure
  Min. 30 - Max. 50 panels
Illustrations (stick man drawing is not an illustration) can either be coloured or greyscale or   screen tone shaded render.
Content must be PG-13 and SAFE FOR WORK

Required visual file and resolutions (JPG only)

Comic panel (webtoon format) - W800 pxl x H1280 pxl

REFLECTION

This is by far the most intense workload from all tasks and all module. Planning out the ideas for this task is very stressful for me. This is because the task given for this final project consist of all elements that i hate, firstly i hate comics just because of how they look, secondly horror, this is self-explanatory, thirdly, the skills needed to create this project mainly drawing. Drawing has been my weakest link compared to all the other skills required in this module. Although this final project has been a "jackpot" for me, i then learned to step out of my comfort zone and try experimenting with all those aspects that i hate. Since i could consider myself a perfectionist, it is very hard for me to start working on the project without having a concrete idea and strong imagery on how i want the outcome to be. This really made me "procrastinate" on advancing for this final task. A lot of research and rough sketches in my brain such as spending hours on hours on webtoon just to get inspired for my work, google-ing old and new comics to see a concrete foundation on what makes comic a comic while also learning the differences of those 2 to implement in my work. After completing this task, surprisingly i had quite a lot of fun doing this, in my opinion this is the fun type of challenging. I now know even more of my strengths and weaknesses, what i like and what i don't like, as i've stated earlier, ultimately i still hate comics and horror.

This module has taught me a lot of visual aspects from stills, to motion. I really enjoyed doing motion related stuff such as messing around in after effects, post production in Final Cut Pro (Premiere Pro). So far the thing i hate least is drawing, drawing the vormator character, drawing 31 panels of comic, but then from this i learned a lot of aspects which i never touched before. I also learned from this experience that in the design industry, not all projects and/or tasks bombarded at us will be of our liking, and we just have to accept it.
