Project 1: Self Portrait
LECTURE
Self Portrait:
A self representation in the form of a drawing/painting/sculpture/design. It
is a visual depiction of the self.
A self-portrait artwork represents the designer/artist-in other words, how
he sees himself, what he's feeling, and how he wants to be seen by others.
It's not necessarily about creating a realistic image of yourself; instead,
it's often an exercise in self exploration.

Project 1 Progress
I first did a rough sketch of what i had in my mind for this project.

Digitalization
Fig 2.2: background image trace
Fig 2.3: post processed image
I purposely took a night-time image for my background to further give context
and meaning to my artwork as for myself, i would be more productive at night.
Hence, the dark themed night time artwork.
I then proceed to create my artwork
Fig 2.4: face tracing
I use Apple's sidecar feature to use illustrator on my iPad to help me get a
better experience using Adobe Illustrator for this step of the artwork as a
lot of lines is required to be drawn. Using apple's great integration between
devices, i used the apple pencil with the iPad which is connected to my laptop
to help me use the pencil tool for creating these intense lines.
I took a lot of pictures to help me get the angle for the artwork for
tracing.
I then finalize my artwork with this composition as i would like to achieve
most of the design principles taught.
I added more "tech" related objects to achieve balance and meaning for my
final artwork.
Fig 2.6: shirt tracing
Fig 2.7: rough elements
After i finished doing the details separately, i then roughly stacked all
the elements to give me an idea to achieve a better composition.
Fig 2.8: finalized composition
Gestalt Principle is achieved by the lower part of my body giving a
sense of continuity by the gradient and background. I kept the lower portion
empty as i would like to have white space giving the sense of minimalism, like
the table top which is mostly empty and clean.
Contrast is also present from the depth of my subject towards the
background, and also the bright table top contrasted with the whole dark theme
of the artwork. The contrast between my minimal design and the detail of some of my elements (Hair contrasted with face, table with laptop detail)
Balance/Harmony is present asymmetrically by having my main
subject on the left side of the rule of thirds grid while the monitor and
laptop on the right side. This give the sense of proportional weight on the
artwork.
Emphasis works in conjunction with the balance from the artwork as
i would like to emphasize my main subject, which is myself holding the camera
being emphasize by size and the bright skin tone contrasted by the dark
nature. Emphasized in a way that attracts my viewers towards the main subject
by placing myself on the rules of thirds grid while having FLOW and
sense of direction looking towards the right side of the composition.
Symbol is slightly present as i put visual lexical field together in a
term of "tech" and minimalism. All the elements in the artwork (camera,
monitor, laptop, ambient lighting) symbolizes technology that would create a
subtle communication to my viewers visually linking everything together.

REFLECTION
I had a lot of fun doing this project, not only it made me think what i should put inside the artwork, but then i learned to combine all the principles of designs taught throughout this module. For sure doing this project purely using adobe illustrator is a challenge because the image cant be easily manipulated compared to photoshop, but then i gained a lot of knowledge about using adobe illustrator while i didn't know before. I had all the principles of design executed subconsciously while creating this artwork, which i was amused of having all linked together nicely. Since my hobby for photography is portrayed in this artwork, i used photography to do this artwork. For instance, the background, i purposely use the in build image trace tool to replicate my shot while tweaking it to be harmonized in that minimal nature. Secondly, i had to take a picture of myself using a tripod to get a realistic dimension of myself to be traced in illustrator. I learned a lot from this project and i would say this could be one of the most intensive vector art i've done for BDCM. To conclude, in my opinion i have successfully portrayed myself visually using objects and elements of design, some aspects being subtle while others are visually loud that communicates with my audience on how i am personally, and how i think/want others to see me from their perspective.
