Task 2: Decisive Moment
LECTURE
Week 5:
Visual Techniques: Chiaroscuro
This is an Italian term which literally means 'light-dark'. In paintings the
description refers to clear tonal contrasts which are often used to suggest
the volume and modelling of the subjects depicted. Artists who are famed for
the use of chiaroscuro include Leonardo da Vinci and Caravaggio.
Chiaro: Light
Curo: Dark
An artistic lightning choice to:
1. Increase dramatic tension
2. Create sensational effect
3. pull your attention to a subject in an intense way
4. Create a tasteful composition of negative vs positive spaces
Fig 1.1: Caravaggio: chiaroscuro
Visual Techniques: Composition 3 (Rhythm and movement)
What is Rhythm and Movement and why is it important? MOVEMENT is the path the
viewer's eye takes through a work of art. Movement can be directed along
lines, edges, shapes and color. RHYTHM is created when one or more elements
are used repeatedly to create a feeling of movement.
Shapes and lines are basic visual elements to create movement

Establish patterns and rhythms
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.
Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to
create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or
dancing.

For this part of the task, we were asked to create a minimal poster
illustration that highlights a scene from a certain movie. This poster should
include a text that would support its illustration relating to that certain
scene, then creating a gif from that illustration that would further
demonstrate the context of that illustration. I chose the movie Back to the
Future which is an old movie to be my scene inspiration. The scenes and
dialogue from this movie is still brought up until this era which in my
opinion, from my illustration, this would create a strong sense of context
that works in conjunction with the tag line.
I initially sketched this for the poster to help me develop and digitalize the
illustration.
Sketches

Progress
I then proceeded to digitalize my sketch with the help of google finding a
back view of the actual car/time machine
Fig 2.2: car illustration
I created my illustration by tracing out this car
Fig 2.3: illustrating pt1
Fig 2.4: illustrating pt2
Fig 2.5: illustrating pt3 (car done)
Tracing this car is very time consuming and challenging due to the detail
put in the actual car which i want to illustrate. But luckily for me i
didn't encounter any major difficulties in creating this illustration since
i am quite familiar with Adobe Illustrator and their tools. After Fig 2.5,
Ms Anis gave feedback to put more elements from a specific scene. She
mentioned to put the clock tower scene from the movie which is struck by
lightning.
After the feedback, i gathered more resources for reference of that
particular scene.

I then updated the car illustration to have lightning striking the antenna
from a wire. I created the lightning effect first on a separate artboard.
Fig2.10: Lightning effect
I then combined the lightning to the main illustration to get this final
layout.
Fig 2.11: finished layout
To finalize this illustration, i added the console from the interior of the
car to display the time.
Then, after the feedback session for week 7, i then added the text from the
movie to give a stronger context for the scene/movie.
Here is the overall illustration progress:

FEEDBACK
Ms. Anis commented on my initial delorean illustration with red fire trails
stating that its to general, that scene appeared seevral times on all 3
movies of Back to the Future, not highlighting a particular scene. She then
suggested 1 scene which is the clock tower scene from the first movie.
Basically lightning striking the clock tower which then gets wired to the
car to send the car back to the future.
After my second attempt on adding the lightning scene, Ms Anis said i was
good to go to animating but ill need to add a tagline that represents the
scene.
