Task 3: Type Exploration and Application

For this final part of the module, we were tasked to find a design a typeface from A-Z, 0-9, and several punctuations. I chose a brand that heavily needs a redesign from its visually problematic logo, MR. DIY. My plan was to redesign its logo to be more visually appealing, because in my opinion a company's logo would really define its social standing in a market.

Fig 1.1: making the strokes needed

I started with creating the strokes to have a consistent font.

I then designed the MR DIY logo using the strokes.

Then i used the actual logo to match its color scheme

Fig 1.3: logo with color

After questioning my decision to go with their actual color which looks tacky, i then experimented with a lot of color combinations with similar base color.

Fig 1.4: Color Exploration

I liked the top most color and bottom-left. I then went with those color scheme for this project.

Fig 1.6: logo 2

I couldnt choose between these 2 logos, in my opinion i like the second logo better, but the first logo have more resemblance of the actual logo.

After finalizing the logo, i then continued to design the whole typeface.

After being satisfied with everything, i compiled it cleaner like usual font designers showcasing their fontpack.

Fig 2.2: pingiy.ttf

I named my font PINGIY for no reason. It just suddenly strucked me to name it PINGIY.

I then attempted to convert the vector file into fontforge from the tutorial video poster in youtube:

I first exported letter by letter to .svg (scalable vector graphics) for easier importing to fontforge.

Then i followed the tutorial to continue the process in fontforge.

I then set the kerning for individual letterforms.

After finalizing the typeface and done importing illustration to ttf, i continued with the last part of the task which was the application, an additional feedback from Mr. Vinod.

He commented to create several advertisement for the brand using the typeface so that its not just the logo.

For my advertisement, i dont want to create ads like what the brand did, very hectic, messy composition, colors are very not appealing etc..

I then did this...

Feedback

Mr vinod commented to create an advertisement to apply this task (final part).

Reflection

Experience

The whole experience while creating this brand redesign was quite fun but a bit rushed, since there was a lot of holidays back to back on a monday, this assignment is rushed to only being 2 weeks. But recreating this logo was quite fun for me, a new experience since usually we were asked to design stuff from scratch. This time i had a reference, just doing it better.

Observation

I observed theres a lot that can be done in 2 weeks time, as shown from this task. Designing almost 1 full typeface and redesigning a large brand from Malaysia while applying it into an ad.

Findings

I found that redesigning for a brand isnt an easy thing to do, even from a really problematic background. For this task since its not official, i have a lot of freedom on what i want to do, the only obstacle was Mr Vinod's feedback, but since this assignment is rushed and i missed 1 class, i didnt get a proper feedback regarding the logo and advertisement. I concluded that designing an official brand professionally would be very troublesome as the brief would be very scrict, such as the use of colors, how they want the composition and another problem with how the brand would want them to be perceived from their logo.

Further Reading

Based from the files in the facebook group, i read further regarding typography from a book poster there named "A Type Primer by John Kane"

Fig 10.1: A type Primer: John Kane

I would just go with this book as its posted in the facebook group. Secondly, I've seen the content of the book which correlates to the topics that we learn in typography, plus more.

In this book, the basics such as fonts, typefaces, definitions and the history is shown, its like a continuation of the lecture given by Mr. Vinod. Other topics that is also present in the book which helped me gather references and knowledge includes:

        - Typeface comparison
        - Type expression
        - Letterforms
        - Text formatting such as:
                - tracking
                - kerning
                - leading
                - highlighting text
                - widows and orphans
                - column layouts
                - cross-alignment
                - hierarchy

This book also has several topics not discussed in class, such as colors. Color, which isn't lectured as detail as the book, has not even been discussed as for our first assignment, colors were not to be used.
